New tools & infrastructures for the future

Civic Capital is a call to fundamentally shift the way we understand the value embedded into civic assets, how it can be actualized, captured and redistributed.

We argue that we have mechanisms, if still embryonic, to innovate how we deploy capital for shared benefit and to cope with interconnected challenges of our time.

Civic Capital aims to explore and experiment in developing the next generation of system financing tools and models for our current and future commons and collective wealth. We believe this will reconfigure the way cities, citizens, communities, investors and businesses work together.

Civic Capital is a shared platform for:

1 — Disseminating widely examples of global innovations, practices, tools and models that are improving the commons as well as the manner and methods deployed to support their spread, distribution and integration in and across their local jurisdictions.

2 — Share research projects including scans, maps, polls and surveys regarding the civic capital ecosystem in Canada.

3Experiments around exemplary innovations, practices, tools and models inspired from global best practices that hold the promise of renewing, restoring and advancing the commons.

Our Values

— We believe climate change and inclusive development as inextricably entwined.
— We act to shift power and decolonize.
— We aim to deliver benefit to groups of people that often benefit least and whose wealth, land and labour has been and is currently exploited in cities.
— We engage in brave open source culture of sharing data, ideas and information to support innovation.

Our Method

— We have a bias towards action and experimentation.
— We take a systems approach and focus on activities and approaches that can be scaled.
— We have a multi-sector approach, including bias for work with corporations who are clearly contributing to the public good (e.g. B Corps).
— We give primacy to lived experience and community wisdom.
— We recognize the important role of governments in system change.
